The Swedish Royal Family belongs to the Bernadotte dynasty, who have held the Swedish throne for over 200 years.

Margrethe II of Denmark, 1940–

Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid, born 1940, is the eldest daughter of Frederik IX of Denmark and Princess Ingrid of Sweden, later Queen Ingrid of Denmark.

Margrethe graduated from Zahle's school in Copenhagen in 1959. After studying philosophy at the University of Copenhagen, she studied archeology at the University of Cambridge, where she received a diploma in prehistoric archeology in 1961.

She then studied political science at the University of Aarhus, the Sorbonne University in Paris, and at the London School of Economics until 1965.

Margrethe also underwent military volunteer training in the Air Force for women.

Margrethe married Henri Marie Jean André (1934–2018), Count de Laborde de Monpezat, in 1967, later Prince Henrik of Denmark. The couple had two sons, Crown Prince Frederik (X) (born 1968) and Prince Joachim (born 1969).

On January 14, 1972, she ascended the Danish throne as Queen Margrethe II. The Queen abdicated on 14 January 2024 and was succeeded by her eldest son, King Frederik X.
